Reviews

I was looking forward to this book, but in the end there's deception. I love Sonic Youth, but what really brought me to the band was Thurston Moore's record collector rock - the cover versions of Kim Fowley, of Crime, or songs like Expressway. Kim Gordon's vocals, although great, often were too stuck in plain old messaging. And now the book shows, she's really not that much into music, and she has no interesting story to tell about that part of her life. Honestly, there's too much about her life, growing up, parents, art and artists, I can not understand how somebody so cool can get it so wrong. Who wants to know that, when the title promises 'girl in a band'? And then people pop up, like Julia Cafritz, but you will not learn a lot about that band, or she makes some clothes with Sofia Coppola, and then she sells the brand, but she has not really a lot to say about that either. The most intense parts are about the split with Thurston and the new woman in his life, who gets slashed au maximum. I do not think that this book was really necessary, and it did not do me any good to read it, it now spoils the records a bit.
